SORORITY HISTORY

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young educators: Mary Lou Allison Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin and Cubena McClure.

The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University. From seven young educators, Sigma Gamma Rho has become an international service organization comprised of women from every profession.

Sigma Gamma Rho offers its members opportunities to develop their unique talents through leadership and involvement in sorority activities. Sorority activities provide an atmosphere where friendships and professional contacts are developed which often lead to bonds that last a lifetime.

In November 2012, a group of sorors conceived the idea of establishing a new graduate chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in the city of Round Rock, TX. Round Rock, was the home of a growing African American community, attracting new industries and embarking upon ambitious renovation and expansions of its downtown areas.

The women saw a need for increased participation from community organizations in the development of the city and betterment of its citizens.  Since many of them were young women with young families, they had a vested interest in assuring that support services were available to the city's community, particularly African American youth.

An intense effort began to contact sorors, who would be interested in working with the group to form the new chapter. On July 26, 2014, Maureen Oyiriaru, Virginia Pearson, Venice Taylor, Tawanda McCall, Eva Marlene King, Carmina Hill, Shanea McGee and Jennifer Beckford, chartered the Magnificent, Motivated, Mighty Mu Beta Sigma Chapter, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc
